Flag Stop Policy

Hornell Area Transit buses operate with a Flag Stop Policy. This policy serves our riders with the highest level of convenience and ease of access to our service. Our flag stop policy is in effect during all hours of operation.

What is a Flag Stop?

A Flag Stop is the ability to flag the bus down at any point along it’s route to stop to allow you access. Drivers are trained to look for a rider along their route with the hand raised to indicate their desire for the bus to stop. The bus will stop where it is SAFE and FEASIBLE to stop to allow boarding.

Does the bus still have bus stops?

Yes. Scheduled bus stops are noted on our schedule where the bus will stop at a designated location.

Should I give advance notice if I plan to flag the bus for a stop?

Yes! While a rider can flag down the bus without advance notice, it is best for us to know to anticipate your ride. This will give you the assurance you are scheduled for pick up and will give our driver advance notice to look for you on his scheduled route

How should I notify you if I want a ride?

Simply call our office, 607-324-7910 and speak to one of our dispatchers to notify us of your intent to ride. A 24-hour notice for a call is preferred, but not required. Feel free to email us at: hat@cityofhornell.com to schedule as well. Phone is the preferred method as confirmation and scheduling of your trip can occur at the time of the call. Email is checked regularly, but not monitored at all times. Please do not assume you are scheduled for a stop unless a confirmation response was received.

Facebook message requests for rides are NOT accepted, as our Facebook page and messages are not routinely monitored.

When is a bus unable to be flagged for a stop?

The Flag Stop option may not be available in certain areas where it is unsafe or impractical for the bus to stop, such as highways or busy intersections.
