Welcome to Hornell Area Transit! Established in 1980, Hornell Area Transit is dedicated to providing quality and reliable transportation services to our clients. Our drivers are courteous, fully licensed, and insured. All of our vehicles are clean, comfortable, and handicapped accessible. 


This rider guide provides important information and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers using our bus service.


Please arrive 5 MINUTES BEFORE SCHEDULE PICK-UP TIME, as weather & traffic conditions may cause slight variation.


  • When boarding our bus, please do not cross in front of the bus.
  • Please, do not cross behind the bus until the bus departs the stop.


Please note the following rules and information when riding on our transit system.


  1. Respectful Behavior: Please respect your bus drivers and fellow passengers during your journey. Keep conversations and noise at a considerate level to maintain a pleasant environment. No fighting, use of profanity, indecent language or gestures. No disorderly behavior or intoxication.
  2. Fare Payment: All passengers are required to pay the designated fare to ride the bus. Please have the exact fare ready. Drivers are unable to make change. Accepted payment methods include cash, passes, or tickets. We are unable to accept credit card payments at this time. If you have any questions regarding fares, feel free to contact our office.
  3. Do not stand in front of the white line: Please do not stand in front of the white line. This is for your safety and the safety of the driver.
  4. No Smoking or Consumption of Restricted Substances: Smoking, including the use of electronic cigarettes, cannabis, or any other substances that emit or disperse in the air, is strictly prohibited on our buses (this includes perfumes, colognes and any aerosol product).
  5. Eating/Drinking: The consumption of food or beverages is not allowed on the bus. Please also maintain cleanliness and avoid littering.
  6. Use of Personal Devices: You may use personal electronic devices with headphones during your ride. However, please ensure that the sound is not audible to other passengers to avoid causing any disturbance.
  7. Avoid Distracting the Driver: To ensure everyone's safety, please refrain from engaging in behavior that may distract the bus driver. This includes unnecessary conversations, excessive movement, or requesting the driver's attention while the bus is in motion.
  8. Appropriate Attire and Hygiene: We kindly request that passengers wear appropriate attire, including shirts and shoes or suitable footwear. Additionally, please maintain personal hygiene to ensure a pleasant atmosphere for all passengers. Please be aware overuse of colognes, perfumes, and aftershaves may be offensive as strong body odor. In some cases, we have had passengers go into seizures, have allergic reactions, and/or complain of nausea related to strong odors.

    We recommend passengers dress appropriately for the weather. In an unusual circumstance, passengers may have to evacuate the bus and proper clothing would be extremely important.     Please be considerate of your fellow passengers. Soiling or creating remnants of waste is prohibited.
  9. Preservation of Property: Do not damage, vandalize, or destroy any property belonging to Hornell Area Transit.
  10. Prohibited Items: For everyone's safety, firearms or any hazardous materials are strictly prohibited on the bus. Please refrain from bringing such items on board.
  11. Emergency Exits & Emergency Aisles: Please keep all aisles and emergency exits free to open
  12. Luggage and Bags: Passengers are permitted to bring luggage, bags, backpacks, and packages on board. However, please ensure that these items do not obstruct the aisle or doorways. A restriction of no more than what a rider can carry in two hands while boarding is enforced
  13. A seated passenger may not deny another passenger an otherwise available seat because a second seat is being used for personal belongings.
  14. Wheeled Carts and Totes: If you have a two- or four-wheeled shopping cart or tote, please ensure it meets the size restrictions. It should not exceed 18 inches in width, 26 inches in length, or 30 inches in height (excluding wheels and handles). We recommend using folding shopping carts for convenience. Please store these carts in front of your seat without obstructing passenger movement.
  15. Walkers: All walkers must be folded and secured. Passengers may use walkers to assist in boarding the bus using the wheelchair lift.
  16. Strollers: Folding "umbrella" type strollers are allowed on board. Please place them in front of your seat, ensuring they do not block the aisle or doorways. For safety reasons, children should not remain in strollers while the bus is in motion. Children must either sit on the lap of an adult guardian or have their own seat.
  17. Mobility Devices: Our buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts to accommodate passengers using mobility devices. We welcome the use of wheelchairs or recognized mobility aids, that can safely fit on our lifts. Our lifts are 34 inches wide and 54 inches deep. We are able to accommodate a weight capacity of up to 1,000 lbs. We strive to accommodate recognized mobility devices to provide a safe and accessible experience for all passengers. Please feel free to call our office if you have any questions about if your mobility device is able to be used on our buses.
  18. Weight Capacity: The wheelchair lifts on our buses are able to accommodate weight capacity of up to 1000 pounds. This includes the COMBINED weight of the passenger and the mobility device. Please note some of our buses have a weight capacity of 750lbs. If the combined weight of the passenger and the mobility device exceeds 750lbs, it may be helpful to call ahead to ensure the appropriate bus is utilized for your trip. It is important to ensure that the total weight ● Bike racks are made available on HAT buses on a first come basis. Children under 14 may use the rack, when traveling with an adult. Anyone using the bike racks must be strong enough to load and unload their own bike. Our buses have a limit of 2 bikes. Due to safety regulations, the driver cannot get off the bus to assist you. They can, however, offer verbal instructions from inside the bus. HAT is not responsible for any damage while using the bike rack. Riders assume all responsibility.   19. Please note that items such as shopping carts, non-mobility devices, or personal items that cannot be carried by the passenger are discouraged from use on the lifts. If you have any questions or require further information regarding the transportation of mobility devices, please feel free to contact our office.
  20. Bicycles: To enhance convenience for cyclists, we provide external bike racks on our buses. Bicycles are not allowed inside the bus cabin. If you wish to bring your bicycle, please ensure it fits properly in the designated bike rack. With the increased popularity of electronic bikes (ebikes), please call to verify your bike will fit in our bike rack. If you have any concerns about the compatibility of your bicycle, such as tire width exceeding the rack's capacity, please contact us prior to your trip for further assistance.

We encourage individuals to describe their requirements for using our service, and we will make every effort to accommodate reasonable requests.

    To Request a Modification:
  • Describe the specific assistance or modification needed.
  • You are not required to use the term "reasonable modification" when making a request.
  • Whenever possible, submit your request in advance by calling our office.
  • In cases where advance notice is not feasible, our staff will assess the situation and make a decision regarding the requested modification.
